Institution with history



On January 25th, 1983, the National Institute of Statistics, Geography and Informatics (INEGI) was created by presidential decree, which integrated the following into its structure:

  • The General Directorate of Statistics, which has been in operation since 1882, when it belonged to the Ministry of Development, Colonization, Industry and Trade.
  • The General Directorate of Geography, established in 1968 and which was assigned to the Ministry of the Presidency.
  • The General Directorate of Computing Policy.
  • The General Directorate of Information Integration and Analysis.

With its creation, the INEGI modernized the valuable tradition that our country had in terms of collecting, processing and disseminating information about the territory, population and economy. It brought together in a single institution, the responsibility of generating statistical and geographical information.

Since 1985, the Institute has decentralized to locate its headquarters in the city of Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes.
