#Until 2005, statistics on suicide attempts and suicides were collected in the offices of the Public Prosecutor; as of 2006, only data on suicides are published, which are collected through the records of mortality statistics, particularly of accidental and violent deaths.

Its regularity is annual, the information on suicide attempts is available until 2005; the information on suicides from 2006 to 2011. Data can be generated using mortality statistics.

The publication of information on suicide attempts and suicides began in the 1930s and in 1995 its detailed publication in a specific notebook began. Until 2005, the format in which it was collected was the individual statistical report card, contained in the notebook for accidental and violent deaths of the Public Prosecutor.

As of 2006, data are published only for suicides, which are collected through the records of mortality statistics, particularly of the accidental and violent deaths.

To generate statistics on suicide attempts and suicide, the circumstances in which these events occur, as well as sociodemographic characteristics of the suicidal population.

The time observation unit is the calendar month, while the regularity with which final results are obtained is annual.

Theme coverage
The statistic quantifies two types of events:
  • Suicide attempt. Act of a person, whose result goes against its very existence.
  • Suicide. Act of a person, whose result destroys its own existence.
The variables for which the information is broken down are: state and rural or urban area of occurrence of the act, month and place of occurrence, means used and causes that motivated the act; and sociodemographic variables such as: gender, age, schooling, marital status, occupation, religion or cult, family history of suicide, status of having children, rural or urban area and state of habitual residence.

Statistics were generated and disseminated until 2005.
