Presentación National Survey of Seasonal Household Income and Expenditure, 2022

The National Survey of Seasonal Household Income and Expenditure 2022 was conducted from December 25th, 2021 to January 7th, 2023. Its objective is to provide a statistical overview of the behavior of household income and expenditure in terms of its amount, source and distribution throughout a year; additionally, it provides information on the occupational and sociodemographic characteristics of the household members; to show data on the infrastructure characteristics of the housing unit and the household equipment; to identify the periods of the year in which households show patterns in which their expenditure varies as well as their income, whether due to work, property income, transfers, among others.

In addition to the traditional National Survey of Household Income and Expenditure (ENIGH), from the conduction of 2008, the INEGI publishes the results of the new construction of variables, which have been constructed and presented according to UN recommendations, specifically those issued in the 17th International Conference of Labour Statisticians and in the Canberra Group Report.

The main differences of this new construction of variables regarding the traditional construction of the ENIGH variables are listed below. It is recommended to consult the document New construction of incomes and expenses of the ENIGH 2008, where a more detailed presentation of the differences can be found.
  1. The non-monetary income and the non-monetary expenditure, are no longer presented separately.
  2. The current household income is  broken down into a) Work income; b) Property income; c) Transfers; d) Estimate of leasing of the housing unit; e) Other current incomes.
  3. In-kind incomes are now presented within the income category to which they belong; this way, in-kind transfers are within the transfers category, in-kind remunerations within the remuneration for subordinate work category and self-consumption is included in the calculation of income from self-employment.
  4. The Christmas bonus is included in the work income under the remunerations for subordinate employment category. The Christmas bonus, which was collected in annual terms, is added quarterly in the income calculation.
  5. Self-consumption (and self-supply) that was made by households of the goods they produce or traded, no longer appears in the tabular data of income sources, because it is a component, among others, of the income from self-employment. However, this variable is published in the new tabular data of income from businesses of the households.
  6. Gifts received by households from other households on a single occasion, were excluded from current income, because they do not meet the requirement of regular inputs necessary to consider them as income. These transfers are recorded under the heading of financial and capital payments.
  7. The housing rental estimate category is presented as a separate category from income, due to the fact that it is conceptually a different input from the others, since it is an income that comes from providing services in the household for personal consumption.

To provide a statistical overview of the behavior of household income and expenditure in terms of its amount, source and distribution throughout a year; additionally, it provides information on the occupational and sociodemographic characteristics of the household members; to show data on the infrastructure characteristics of the housing unit and the household equipment; to identify the periods of the year in which households show patterns in which their expenditure varies as well as their income, whether due to work, property income, transfers, among others.

Sampling framework

The sampling framework used is the Master Sampling Framework 2012 of the INEGI.

The housing units are chosen through a meticulous statistical process (including the uninhabited housing units and of temporary use), ensuring that the results obtained from only part of the population (sample) can be generalized to the total.

The selection is made in two stages:
  • In the first stage, primary sampling units (PSU's) are selected.
  • In the second stage, the housing units object of interview of each survey are selected.
Sampling scheme
Probabilistic, while its design is stratified, two-stage and by clusters, where the last selection unit is the housing unit and the observation unit is the household; consequently, the results obtained from the survey are generalized to the entire population.

Weighted average

In the National Survey of Seasonal Household Income and Expenditure 2022, four factors are presented, two associated only with the housing unit. The variable factor_viv is an annual factor, while the variable fac_viv_t expands to each of the quarters, with these factors the estimate of the total number of housing units and their characteristics is obtained, found in the VIVIENDA table.

Also, there are factors associated with the household, annual (factor) and quarterly (factor_t), with which estimates are obtained for the rest of the information in the survey, such as population, households, income and expenses. They are found in the HOGAR and CONCENTRADOHOGAR tables.

The operation field of the survey was carried out from December 25th, 2021 to January 7th, 2023. This period is divided into thirty-eight tens, in each of them the information is collected during seven consecutive days.
